What is a "crown" in dental terms?

I just recently had my root canal done. It is filled with silver and he said I would need a "crown". Could someone explain what a crown for my root canal is? And how do they put it in? Will they have to shave my tooth down and place a screw in it? I am dental phobic- >~<
